Star Map HUD: Screen Graphics: Motion Test

Project Overview
The project includes three motion tests of star map screens, which present complex decoded data about unknown star systems. The design should consider various elements such as mapping, solar systems/nebulas, measurement/direction systems, ancient symbols, and more. The screens should have an organic and circular feel, conveying a moody analog atmosphere. The color palette should be simple, using 2-3 tones.

Challenge
The project brief includes a request for a design that evokes a gritty and retro atmosphere while avoiding being too sophisticated. One of the references for the design is Blade Runner 2049, among other modern sleek HUD designs. The challenge is to create a design that does not feel overly influenced by Blade Runner.

Ideation/Execution
Since the background story was not included in the brief, a hypothetical storyline was created to approach the project. To envision the set where the graphics would be used, the designer searched extensively for music that set the right mood. Inspiration was drawn from various sources, including dusty windows, rusty tools in the garden, data science, and more. I scoured Pinterest and other websites, curated images and ideas into themes, and began with rough sketches. During the initial design process, the ideas were refined and fluff was weeded out. Helvetica was chosen for the design, as it was commonly used in science and math book covers from the 60s and 70s.

Design & Animation: Sachie Kikuchi

Process
Initially the dark orange/brownish colour was chosen. I changed it to light greenish blue to convey the bleak atmosphere. As soon as the design became too clean, I needed to dial back to be more analogue and start again.
